Vanuatu Water Music

Women on the Banks Islands in Vanuatu give literal meaning to the term Water Music. Here’s what happened when Glen and I visited on our way to New Caledonia.

It was getting late and we were taking off on passage early the next morning.  However, we had some clothes and school supplies to distribute and waved down a passing cayuca (dugout canoe) to transport the goods to the village.  In thanks, two villagers came back in their narrow wooden canoes to take Glen and I to shore and the villagers gathered for a surprise performance. The biggest surprises sometime come from the smallest islands!Water music is described in Julie’s second book, Crossing Pirate Waters, but there is nothing like a video to fully appreciate this unique traditional island music. Water music is performed nowhere else in the world.
